Binary always exiting with exitcode "1", trace of debugger not working

Hi everyone,

I compiled the "epkg" package on Digital Unix 4.0d. After a few minor
tweaks the compile went well, but the created binaries always exit with
an error code of "1", nothing is printed to the console. Even a printf
debugging statement at the first line of the main function is not
printed, so the program obviously terminates before entering the main
function.

A "trace" of the program doesn't work either, the program terminates
obviously before trace can attach itself to the the process.

Gdb doesn't work either, it's the same problem as with trace.

Has anyone perhaps some hints, where to look, how to invoke the program
to get some more information why it fails?
