File system/layout best practise

Hi managers,

I have an issue to resolve that concerns the lay-out of my systems
files.

Without labouring you all with the full details of my file system lay-
out, I would like to know what managers thought of having directories
that would contain, in some cases, over 8000 files whose names would
go 0001{a,b,c,h}....2000{a,b,c,h}.

The crux of the problem is that I need to get additional storage. It
can't fit on my DS10. So I am looking at a NAS. But what OS? A lot
come with MSWIN but my experience of Windowses handling of large
amounts of files is not great. That leaves LINUX and the ext2 file
system. So I would be interested in hearing from anyone how has large
numbers of files in this type of file system. There will be MSWIN
clients that need access to the files (SAMBA).

I could maintain the files on the current ADVFS system but there is
not a huge amount of room for growth. Still, my experience of ADVFS
has been good but I have had the odd "ARG list too long" message.

Should I be trying to find a new way to divide up my files or can
anyone vouch for a file system that handles this number of files.

Thanx.
Dp.
