Hi,

the problem was as suggested an autonegotiation issue.
Thanks for the input by Werner Rost(werner.rost@zfboge.com)
and Russ, Vernon J. (vjruss@tva.gov). Werner pointed out
that he in general does not use autonegotiation
1. im Konsolmodus: set ewa0_mode ...
2. in /etc/rc.config: IFCONFIG_0="10.3.7.149 netmask
255.255.252.0 speed 200" (i.e. 100FD)
Vernon gave some general hints
I suggest you look at:
  netstat -i for errors.
netstat -r to be sure your routing table is correct.
You might want to flush the routing table.
arp -a to be sure the arp cache is correct. You might
want to flush arp cache.

I finally set the speed in the running system with
ifconfig tu0 speed 200 on all involved systems and the
errors didn't appear anymore.

Unfortunately I didn't find yet means how to check the
actual speed of the NIC. I could it only check indirectly
when I changed the switch port speed to the same value and
it worked. Werner gave the hint to look into
/var/adm/messages. But here the information is only provided
after Booting. This helped to find the current settings but
is not appropriate if one makes changes in the running system.

Regards

Otto

The original problem was:

users on a node A but with their home directory on node B
(both Tru64 V5.1B) get the message

NFS3 RFS3_xxx failed for server B, RPC: timed out
(xxx=read,getattr)

when the are using certain utilities like netscape, pine,
dtmail which access files on their home directory. After
some time the utility pops up but with limited information.

3. How can I find out the actual NIC port speeds on A,B?
(I unsuccessfully looked at hwmgr, ifconfig but
ifconfig obviously only can set a new value?)

I appreciate any hints, what I could do further.

Thanks

Regards

Otto
