Your analysis would appear to be correct. There are a variety
of SCSI controller built using that chip family, only some of
them actually work correctly with the driver in Tru64 UNIX, and
it sure looks like the one you bought doesn't work. And since
we're not doing driver updates to that SIM (as far as I know),
I doubt it will ever work.

You need to find a part that was specifically marketed for use
with Tru64 UNIX (or the older Digital UNIX). They are out there
but you have to know what you're looking for. The QuickSpec may
still be available for that older system, it would list those
Compaq options that were supported.
