Thanks to Alan Rollow, Thomas Blinn, Jim Fitzmaurice, and Mandell
Degerness;

I will summarize all of the answers,

In some instances, DLT IV tapes written with previous formats must be
degaussed and reformatted before being written to with the new format. I
believe this is a drive limitation and some can be purchased that have
the ability to write in previous formats. However, in my case, I can
read but not write. Several suggestions included buying a bulk tape
eraser to remove the formatting information thus allowing my drive to
write to the tape. Other suggestions included making sure the write
protect was not enabled on the tape via the small switch on the tape
itself. This was not the problem in my case. I believe I will purchase
new media because there are only a couple of tapes that are in this
older format.

Thanks

Managers, 4.0g DS20

We have a tape (DLT IV) the when written by and old 20/40 DLT drive our
new VS80 40/80 drive will not write to. Mt reports that it is a read
only file system. Can anyone help me to format/erase this tape or know
any commands that will resolve this incompatibility?

TIA
