Un-Tarring a backup file from DLT-IV Tape

Hello Tru Gurus,

FYI:
DBA ran an export of a database on an AIX Server to
file called dbase.dmp with this command:tar -cvf
/dev/rmt1 dbase.dmp.

now the Tape is re-loaded on a Tru64 Unix(5.1b
w/latest patches) Server and when I try to restore the
export from this tape I get the following error
message:
------------------------------------
#mt -f /dev/ntape/tape0 rew
#tar xvf /dev/ntape/tape0
tar: [offset 0]: I/O error
------------------------------------

Any ideas? Suggestions?
