Hello,

we have got an working Alphaserver 800 5/500 (about 4 years old) to maintain
(the only one). It is running Digital Unix V4.0F-1229 with 256MB. FW-level
ist: 5.5-78.
The machine has 2 internal SCSI drives (SCA) installed (SYS + DATA), each
9GB.

We now need greater disk's and like to have RAID if a drive go bad. Our
thought is to buy an external SCSI-RAID box which provides RAID. We take a
complete system backup, unpluged the internal SCSI-backplane and connect the
external RAID-box to the internal SCSI controller.

Do a AS 800 boot from such an external SCSI-RAID box? How can we copy the
working installation + data over to the new disks? Can this be done with
btcreate + btrestore (a DDS3 tape is connected)?

Please can you give me some advise, we only know Solaris + AIX machines up
to now.

Gruss
