lpd problems

Hello Managers:

Earlier today I ran into a problem with printing through lpd on a Tru64
4.0F system. We use lpd to print jobs to between 20 and 30 remote
printers with fixed ip addresses. At some point lpd simply seemed to
stop forwarding the jobs from the unix queues to the printers. Ipq
would simply show the jobs sitting in the queue, but report that the
JetDirect at the printer had no jobs queued.

We tried a number of things including removing jobs, downing the
individual printers using the lpc command and finally stopping and
restarting lpd daemon itself. We checked and could not find
anyremaining processes using lpd. Finally after stopping and starting
lpd a few queued jobs would print, then everything would stop again.
Finally even the lpq command would not respond. As we had an entire
registration department unable to print we stopped databases and
rebooted the server. After that everything was back to normal.

Does anyone recognize this problem or something else less drastic we
might have done to resolve it? I have never seen this in about three
years of running this server.

Thanks for any insight you might provide.
