Connection via modem / getty

Hello,

I am runnig Tru64Unix V4.0E on an Alpha DEC3000 and a DEC Alpha 600 5/333.
The remote
connection to this servers was made via modem and uucp - this worked for
years without
any problems. Last month I installed PPP.

During file transfer with ftp from a Linux-PC to the Alpha 600 (in France)
the connection
broke. Later the same happened to the other one (which I use here in Vienna
for testing).
Now I can not connect any more. Not even reboot helped.

On the Alpha there is the terminal process running, defined in
/etc/inittab:
    m1:1234:respawn:/usr/sbin/getty /dev/tty00 M9600 vt100
[ with uugetty the some thing happens]

The M9600 entry in /etc/gettydefs is:
    #M9600# B9600 HUPCL CS8 # B9600 SANE IXANY TAB3 HUPCL #login: #M2400

If I try to connect from tip (or minicom from Linux), the modem connection
is
established ("CONNECT 9600 V42bis"), but there is no login-prompt
sent/received.
If I kill the getty-process, the modem connections drops ("NO CARRIER").

Stopping getty and accessing the modem with "tip tip" (the tip entry in
/etc/remote is
"tip:dv=/dev/tty00:br#9600:pa=none:") and minicom from the "remote" site, I
can connect both
modems and exchange data.

On the Alpha I'm using a 3Com U.S.Robotics 56KFaxmodem with the following
settings (ati4):
