cpio -i preservation of ownership and permissions

Hi List,
I've found that a cpio -iBcdumv does not always preserve permissions and
owner/group ownership
of directories when the command is run as root. What happens in these cases
is that the
owner and group are set to "root" and "system" respectively.

Has anyone else any experience of this and is there a work-around?
