My original question

I have a question about changing the IP address on this server. I think
that I can be able to do it was just wondering if there are any gotchas
concerning an IP change that I need to be concerned about.

I think I know how to change it just wondering what other people think
and have gone through.

Running 4.0g and will do a major change because corporate wants it.

Since I am on the subject, does anyone know about VMS? I am a Unix Admin
and also have 1 VMS server that needs changed.

Answers,

VMS: The ip address is straightforward using the tcpip$config procedure

There is a ucx$config.com that should be in your sys$manager directory.
You would use that instead of tcpip$config. I would first shutdown ucx,
which means you need to be at the console or connect through some other
protocol like decnet. When you run ucx$config, there is an option to
shutdown TCP/IP, mine is option 5.

5 - Shutdown DIGITAL TCP/IP Services for OpenVMS

Now from the main menu, select option 1 - Core environment, and then 4 -
Interfaces. This is where you set the ip address on an interface. It
will ask you if you want to reconfigure each interface and at that point
you can make the change. If you just want to see what it looks like, go
into the option and type no when it asks if you want to reconfigure. It
will still show settings.

UNIX: be sure you look for any files *.local in your /etc directory that
might have IP-specific controls that override their corresponding
*.conf files (example: inetd.conf and inetd.local)

Use the network setup scripts to make the change. CDE
has dependencies on the network and when the address
changes without it being aware of the change, it doesn't
        react well.
