Thanks to all who responded. The answer follows.

Everyone mentioned that the shell must be defined in etc shells i.e.:
/usr/bin/bash . This was done however in the passwd file I used a
shortened version /bin/bash . The paths must match. Thanks for
everyone's' responses.

Subject: Ftp login with BASH as default shell

Managers, DS20E Tru64 4.0G, I have compiled bash for this system and
several users have requested this as their shell. This is working
properly however when connecting via ftp, they are disconnected with
this error "530 User harburg access denied, Login failed". This message
is only generated for users that have bash as their shell. Please help.
TIA
