Thanks to the many who replied.

I used DrToms suggestion below;

You can use the "/usr/field/tapex -m" utility to scan the tape and see
what files it has and the physical record (block) sizes. You have to
use the actual on-tape block (record) size in the "dd" command or you
will get the wrong content on disk.

You also have to rewind the tape manually at the beginning, then use
the "no rewind" tape name (/dev/nrmt0h) when you issue the "dd" or you
will get two copies of the first file, which is not what you want.

If this isn't clear, ask. And "tapex" is in the optional "System
Exercisers" subset so you might need to load it from the install media,
and you want to read the reference page, and you need to run it as the
root user but you could guess that..

The block size was 60k
and the link from /dev/tape was for the non-rewind device?.
