Network failure after upgrade to 5.1A

Dear all. We've had a problem after upgrading from 5.0A
to 5.1A on a DS20. The network is now unreachable from
inside and outside the system. (We can ping the system
itself from within.) The symptoms seem very similar to
those reported in

but we haven't been able to find a Summary for the above.
Any suggestions would be appreciated! Apologies in advance
if this is a well known problem... we're Tru64 novices.
