SUMMARY: Kernel Build

Thanks to Dr. Tom Blinn who gave the reply below. In addition to removing
the link /sys/WPDE8 I also had to remove the directory /usr/sys/WPDE8 and
the config file /usr/sys/conf/WPDE8. It then worked fine.

Steve

Try completely cleaning out the kernel build directory, that is,
rm -rf /sys/WPDE8
and see if the problem goes away. The fact that things work if
you use a different configuration name suggests the problem is
some stale stuff in the build directory, and since the directory
will be recreated and repopulated if you remove it and then do
a new "doconfig" with the existing config file, things probably
will just work at that point.

As to exactly why, my guess would be a mis-set file date/time
stamp, but that's just a guess; make depend rules can be VERY
sensitive to bad date/time stamps.

Hi all,

Version 5.1a PK4.

I have a problem when building a new kernel for a couple of my servers.
After selecting all the options it starts to build the kernel then stops
with this error message below. If I specify another name for the kernel
configuration file it works fine. On other servers with 5.1a pk4 applied it
works without a problem. If I specify another name for the kernel
configuration file it also works fine. Line 2 of the config file is just a
blank line with the ident line before and the start of the options after.

*** PERFORMING KERNEL BUILD ***

A log file listing special device files is located in /dev/MAKEDEV.log
Make: makedep, line 2: syntax error. Stop.

*** WARNING ***
An error has occurred during system configuration. A partial listing
of the error log file (/sys/WPDE8/errs) follows:

Make: makedep, line 2: syntax error. Stop.
Press <RETURN> to continue:

Do you want to edit the configuration file? (y/n) [n]:

*** NOTE ***
A new kernel for this machine could not be successfully created.

Restoring original configuration file - /sys/conf/WPDE8

Has anyone seen this before or got any ideas as to what is going wrong?

Thanks in advance

Steve Copper
