Thanks to those who replied. The problem is now solved. I swapped the
positions of the 1GB and the 128MB (to bank 0 and bank 1, respectively)
and the system immediately recognized the full complement of memory in
both banks. For the record my original question was:

Alan Rollow gave a comprehensive answer which might be useful for
others:
