SUMMARY: TCP/IP native on Memory channel

Thanks to John Dustin to build in mchan device to the kernel and attempt to
use the ics0 network interface. Unfortunately although memory channel API's
may be accessible via this method, the use of TCP/IP is not possible.

That requires icsnet.mod static module in the kernel, which in turn appears
to have a dependency on the cluster.mod and cluster filesystem cfs.mod

Personally, I feel that this is just poor coding by the Tru64 developers.
There was no reason why an excellent technology such as Memory Channel
should be coupled to the TruCluster software stack.

As Alan Davis and Robert Fridman state, this was possible in earlier
Trucluster versions, but in the v5 the memory channel has been made
dependent on the availability of cluster mode, specifically CFS.

The short answer therefore is that unlike Tru64 4.x it is impossible to use
TCP/IP over memory channel on Tru64 5.x

Damn. This may well be the straw which breaks the camels back for our 140
customer AS4100 nodes, preventing them from upgrading to the current 5.x
operating system.

Subject: TCP/IP native on Memory channel

This is hopefully a simple yes/no question.

Is it possible to run TCP/IP over a memory channel interface (in our case,
MC2 hubs) on Tru64 5.1b, without running TruCluster?

We want the fast interconnect but don't need the rest of TruCluster baggage
such as shared root filesystem etc.

thanks all.
