SUMMARY: can't login to an ES40

Gurus,

A while ago, I posted a problem in which we could not log on to our
ES40 via ssh or via the console. It is a mail server and the users
were not having any problems, so we waited until the evening and
rebooted. This fixed the problem. HP support gave us a patch which we
installed a few days later; it will probably be in a future patch
release.

Below are two suggestions from the list, followed by my original post.

Are there any console messages like

        <program>: accept: Operation would block

We had this happening to us once and we couldn't login at
all, neither via ssh nor lat nor at the console. HP support
declared that it was the remanant of some port scan attempt.

If you have support, please get a crash dump and let HP look
   at it.

Hi Jerry,

I've seen this happen when prpasswdd is hung up and won't update the C2
database o login. The login process hangs indefinately waiting for it to
return, resulting in the behaviour you are seeing.

If prpasswdd isn't running, start it using the /sbin/rc3.d script. If it
is running, stop and start it using that same script.

Hope this helps,

Danielle.

Subject: ssh hangs on es40

Gurus,

We can't log on to our ES40 either via SSH or via the console. The
system is a mail server and POP, IMAP, and SMTP are working fine, as are
"finger" and web access. But we can't login via SSH or via the console.

The system is running Tru64 5.1a. I tried to login a couple of hours
ago to log in, and got:

        % ssh uclink
        jerry@uclink's password:
Last successful login for jerry: Sun Apr 13 21:50:40 PDT 2003
from ...
Last unsuccessful login for jerry: Sat Apr 12 11:15:07 PDT 2003
from ...

I have left the window open and can not do anything in it. There is no
prompt, and control-C, control-\, etc. do not do anything.

I just tried logging in again and got the same identical results. This
means the first login was not completed and/or not logged to utmp or
wtmp.

Could it be a utmp/wtmp problem that hangs up logins? There is at least
one utility that is still using the old Tru64 4.0f format for utmp/wtmp
entries.

We are scheduling down time tonight to look into it, but would
appreciate any ideas anyone has.
