Ok, I believe I've received enough replies to warrant a summary. It's pretty
straight forward. While it is true that you cannot use any of the AdvFS
utilities to add space to the root filesystem like a normal filesystem there are
ways around this. Basically, you backup the existing disk--get a larger
disk--partition it as you would like--create the domains and filesystems and
swapspace--mount them--restore everything to the new disk--and then boot off of
this new disk. I would be more detailed here, but several people have pointed
out that there are articles on how to do this over at http://www.tru64.org/ .
Also several people have mentioned that this might not help the installupdate
problem, because if it is miscalculating the space as it stands (or not
calculating it at all), then it really wouldn't matter how much space you have
free. So I think I'll wait to hear back from HP guy and make a decision from
