Passwd options

Have a question about the options 'passwd' gives a user:

   1 Pronounceable passwords generated for you
   2 A string of characters generated for you
   3 A string of letters generated for you
   4 To pick your password

- Is it possible to have one of the options as the default (ie, never show
this prompt, always do one of the 4 we set)
- If so, is it possible to change how one of the options generate a
password.

What im looking to do is have the passwd program always generate a password
of at least 8 characters containing letters & numbers.
