[SUMMARY] Spamassassin & Perl version (on 4.0D)

My thanks for replies go to Daniel Clar <Daniel.Clar@supelec.fr>,
Rustam T. Usmanov" <rustam@ruslan.ru>,
Nikola Milutinovic <Nikola.Milutinovic@ev.co.yu>,
Serge <ForgetS@DFO-MPO.GC.CA>,
and Ann Cantelow <cantelow@atlas.csd.net> (in the order of arriving).

Daniel and Rustam used v5.8.0, Ann - 5.6.1.

Serge's personal experiment is that "building applications on TRU64 with
PERL is always best to use the latest version of PERL available". He also
suggests taking precautions and saving the old version before eventual
installing the new one.

Nikola still haven't SpamAssassin but for such things as AMaViS and Cyrus
IMAP Admin used 5.6.1.

Ann admits that installing the new version of Perl takes a while to do
but it's worth doing it. A couple of words of hers about spamassassin:

We compiled [...Perl, v5.6.1...] using all defaults, and it chose
the native cc compiler instead of gcc, as I had hoped it would.

After compiling perl, you will probably find that spamassassin asks
for some other perl modules that are missing. These can also be obtained
from www.cpan.org. Sometimes those modules require further modules, but
eventually the cascade of missing things stops, heh.

All this takes a while to do, but I think it will go smoothly. We love
spamassassin. It helps a lot. Good luck.

    Ann Cantelow

A word of encouragement :)

So, a bad news is that I can't avoid installing the new version of Perl.

A good news is that, for me, 5.8.0 (known as stable) has been built smoothly
(and indeed with the native cc). Now I'm about to look around in order to
save what I'd prefer to.

Now I'm anticipating some satisfaction with making spamassassin work.

Thanks again,
Irene
