insufficient disk while upgrading from 5.1 to 5.1A

The root file system is on a 9GB disk with following
layout:
/ 512MB 41% full
/usr 6178MB 54% full (/var is linked to /usr/var)

There is also a 2GB swap partition.

When I try to upgrade this Alpha 8400 to 5.1A, it
displys insufficient disk space for upgrade. I deleted
all core files, crash files and PreUPD files like it
asked me to. But it still says insufficient disk space
for upgrade. Worse, the fields in
Free Space (MBytes)
------------------
Total Needed
Total Available

are blank (we only have a VT100 terminal - is it
because of it?)

Hence I have no idea of how much more disk space it is
looking for. Before I start deleting software subsets
I would like to get an idea of where the problem is.
My suspicion is the 512MB root partition. Is there a
lot that goes into /opt etc in 5.1A? Would it make
sense to repartition the drive to have a bigger root
partition (say 2GB?).

thanks
SS
