Many thanks to Dr. Thomas Blinn of HP for helping pinpoint where the
problem occurs exactly (following a call to stat() in crontab), and to
Paul A. Sand of the University of New Hampshire, for helping me
understand why. The complete explanation, for those who are interested
is found at (sorry about the long line):

In my original message, I should have pointed out that the user in
question uses vim (Vi IMproved) as his editor, although so do I and at
least one other account with which this was tested (and didn't have the
same problem). With this, I should be able to have the user use Vim in
a mode within which it will not exhibit the same behaviour which is
causing this problem.

Thanks very much to all who took the time to read about and research my
problem...
