Network strangness - telnet hangs

Hi all
can anyone explain why (at random as far as I can tell) machines
I am maintaining (ES40's and DS20E's, 4.0f NHD3, jumbo patchkit 7)
sometimes stop responding to apps like telnet - the connection is accepted but
then the session just hangs... (no login prompt displayed...) However, icmp ping
requests are responded to and applications don't seem to report any issues.

If I go and do an rcinet restart @ the console I can once again login via
telnet.

The only oddities I've seen are some stale arp table entries and interrmittent
loss of the connection to our site DNS. Could this cause the the telnet connects
to hang? Obviously commands like 'netstat -r' take ages as they try and resolve
hostnames ( -rn fixes this obviously by skipping the lookup)... the wierd thing
is that after an 'rcinet restart' telnets work fine again, even though nothing
has changed. I still have stale arp table entries and my DNS is still down.
There's nothing in the system logs to show an issue. the machines I'm trying to
connect from are in /etc/hosts and svc.conf is setup to check there before going
to the DNS..

I just have a static route setup to my default gateway and the interface it set
to be running @ FastFD (100mbps full duplex).

The network cards are the combi scsi/100mb cards (KZPCM card?)

Anyone have any ideas where to look?
thanks
Adam.
