Many thanks to all who replied.

I wonder if other unix platforms have an equivilant of this listing which is half way as helpful?
I doubt it.

In brief, it appears to be a bug with vdump/vrestore and many recommended installing the lastest patches. Good advice. In fact this machine is an interim platform and I will need to repeat the process again to the "real" new platform in a week or so. :(
At least I know what I'm getting into this time.

Detail from Ann Majeske.

I believe the problem was with vdump not creating the
archives properly if ACLs (or any property list entries)
were present on the files as well as vrestore not reading
them properly. If this is the case, you would probably
need patches for both the old server and the new server
and remake the archives. There were several patches for
vdump and vrestore relating to ACLs as well as some
other useful things. I think the most up to date patches
for vdump and vrestore pertaining to ACLs are in the
next patch kit to be released (or maybe the one following
that...) and are thus not generally available yet.

If you have a support contract I would definitely
contact HP and get the most up to date patches.

Turning off ACLs on either system won't help, because
you can still get and set ACLs even if ACLs are
disabled and vdump and vrestore will still try to
save and restore the ACLs.
