SUMMARY: System hang / crash

Original question:

I've an AS1200 running DU V4.0D PK#5 which has hung several times and
crashed twice over the last couple of weeks.

Any help you can provide or pointers as to the cause would be very
appreciated!

Replies:

logg a call. That error message is supposed to be a very rare one, so
something else is going on. What is happening is you are performing a pal
instrustion, when a interupt "memory error or something" else happenes. I
saw it once, and logged a call, had spare part on site, and used part for a
different problem in the middle of another night.

Simon,

The panic is related to the environmental temperature monitoring
subsystem of the AS1200. Some patches for the related driver were
added in patchkit#7 (latest is pk#9).
OR it migth help to clean out the dust from the system components
and filters..

Johan.

I am not familiar with all the hardware in the AS1200 systems, but the
panic happened in platform specific code; in that system, there is a
special "I2C" component which is used for environmental monitoring,
in particular, thermal sensing. As the code comments in the vicinity
of the failing code say,

/*
* A temperature read is done by four writes to the temp sensor register
* to calculate the temperature followed by a read of S0 to get the result
*/

and it looks like the read timed out -- that is, the system tried to
read the temperature sensor and failed, and it looks like the code that
should have recovered doesn't (this is not uncommon, it's really hard
to adequately test hardware failure error recovery logic). I suspect
you have broken hardware and need to get it repaired, which won't be
cheap unless you have a service contract on this system.

Tom

So, many thanks to all three of you: Pat O'Brien, Johan Brusche and of
course Tom Blinn!

I've shutdown the Server and cleaned it out and so far.... all is well! No
further problems.
Should the Server hang/crash again with the same footprint I'll log a call
and arrange to have the board replaced which houses the temperature sensor!

Thanks again!

Regards

Simon
