changing Xconsole "depth"

Hello,
 I am trying to change the default Xwindows "depth" from 8bit to 24bit, on a
xp1000. Is there a way to tell how much memory the video card has? It's my
understanding that you have to have at least 4 MB to be able to increase
from 8 to 24bit. I have already changed /usr/dt/config/Xservers file to
enable the 24bit mode. I have also checked the config via xwininfo -root and
it shows that the depth has changed.
