Intermittently slow vrestore

I am experiencing intermittently slow vrestores on a V4.0F system.

I would normally expect a vrestore to take the same time as the
corresponding vdump, however on occasion I see vrestores taking up to twice
as long as the original vdump.

We are vdumping to a TZ885.

On Friday it took 1 hour 15 minutes to vrestore 9GB.
Today it has taken over 5 hours to vrestore 20GB, when it took only 3 hours
to vdump the original 30GB.

Is this a tape drive issue? I believe the tape drive has been replaced in
the past without any improvement in consistency.
Is it an OS issue?
Any other suggestions?
