Thanks to everyone who responded. I was trying to find a later version of perl, than the one that is bundled with 5.1 or 5.1A (5.00xx). Most said they had no problem with compiling 5.8 on Tru64 from perl.com. Also, Steve Feehan pointed me to a compiled version to try at my own risk: http://sbb.uvm.edu/~sfeehan/alpha/rpms/perl-5.8.0-1.tru64.alpha.rpm
Lastly, it seems as though perl 5.8 comes with 5.1B, which we will be installing soon. Therefore, I think I will wait until I upgrade the OS.
