Thanks so much to Danielle Georgette, Lucien Hercaud and Pat O'Brien
for responding to this question. With the information that I got from them,
and finding out the vdump and hwmgr were also erring out on this box, I
believe I have an answer.

        The error message was:

45571:/sbin/hwmgr: /sbin/loader: Error: libpthread.so: symbol
"__atdlclose_mutex
" unresolved
45571:/sbin/hwmgr: /sbin/loader: Fatal Error: Load of "/sbin/hwmgr" failed:
Unre
solved symbol name

The problem, I believe, was here in the patch kit installation:

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

Problem installing:

 - Tru64_UNIX_V5.1A / Security Related Patches:
        Patch 00807.00 - Security (SSRT1-40U, SSRT1-41U, SSRT1-42U,
SSRT1-45U)

        ./usr/var/cluster/members/member0/spool/cron/crontabs/.new..root:
its origin can not be identified.

This patch will not be installed.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

Our procedure calls for the restoration of the crontab directory,
which includes this file, after the OS load. It appears that the failure of
this patch, or one of its dependent patches, causes the /sbin/loader file
not to be updated and it is no longer compatible with this library.

The solution is going to be either to load the patch kit before we
restore the spool directory, or to baseline the patch kit to fix the install
problem.
