SAN, OS hang with mkfdmn

hi managers,

I have a DS-20 running 5.1a with compaq hba trying to connected to an
emc fc4700 array on a SAN. Both the PROM on the DS-20
and the arrary say they see each other. so far after boot, a new disk device
file is created /dev/disk/dsk1c
but if I try to mkfdmn or disklabel the device, the OS hangs.
has anyone seen this before?
