Easiest upgrade from 5.0 to something supported?

Hi!

We have a carefully handcrafted, RIS-based installation of Tru64 Unix 5.0 on
16 PWS 500au and about 10 DEC 3000 Workstations. The RIS works fully
automated, i.e. we wrote a dozens of scripts and other things, and now we
can at any time reinstall any client from scratch with just one SRM command
without destroying anything.

One problem of this installation is that Tru64 5.0 is out of support, which
materializes in the fact that security updates nowadays only cover 5.0a and
4.0g, but not 5.0.

We principally did not intend to further upgrade this 5.0 installation, as
it fulfills all our needs, but the security question is a serious one, as
some of these computers are directly exposed to the internet.

My questions is as to what would be the most easy way to upgrade this thing
to a revision that still receives security upgrades from Compaq/HP.

Questions that I am concerned about:

- We already lost quite some hardware support for the DEC 3000 platform when
going from 4.0 to 5.0. Will we lose more?

- On one hand we would like to go to the lastest version, but

- on the other hand, we want to spend as few time as possible in changing
our hand-craftet RIS scripts. My hope would be that going from 5.0 to
5.0a we could keep most of this scripts, while my fear is that when
going to 5.1 we might have to change considerably more details.

Any suggestions?

Regards,
Tobias Ernst.
