NFS2 server imre.apl.ucl.ac.uk. not responding still trying

I have 2 DS20s Both keep having NFS events where by the local NFS server seems
not to cope or be unavaliable resulting in messages like:

Jan 6 11:32:28 server1 vmunix: NFS2 server server1.apl.ucl.ac.uk. not responding still trying
Jan 6 11:36:19 server1 vmunix: NFS2 server server1.apl.ucl.ac.uk. ok

The machine 'hangs' between the 2 events. I know this has been reported to be
related to strain on NFS but what can I do to fix it? There are large jobs
which seem to write out a lot of data at the same time as these events; however,
they are writting to NFS mounted files systems on another box not the local host
so whay is the local NFS server expereincing problems? The jobs tend to crash
when this occours too.

Any help in fixing this would be much appreciated.

The machines are patches to a fairly recent revision of the Tru64 patches.
