summary -- burning backup software to an installation CD

Original Question:

I'm still studying to find out which will be the fastest and less
troublesome method
of restoring Tru64 5.1 with AdvFS using commercial software (NetVault).
The backups
are written to DLT tapes but not in vdump mode. One method that I'm
going to
experience and study now is to burn my backup software to a 5.1
installation CD. So
that when I boot to CD, partition my hardrive, make the advfs domains,
and I can
install the backup software. Is it logical, possible, and intelligent
to burn the
backup software to a Tru64 cdrom installation CD and has anyone ever
done this? If
so, where I can find instructions in doing it, is it supported by
Tru64? Thanks in
advance.

The Responses:

Almost everybody suggested this reading:

TE/TITLE.HTM

Adam suggested:

Anyway, the short answer to how to do it is:
a. Copy the contents of the installation CD to a spare disk.
b. Add your backup software
c. Use mkisofs to make an .iso file; burn to CD. You can also test
before
burning by booting from the spare disk.

To make your backup software work, you'll probably need to know some
more
about it:
* Does it need to write anyplace? If so, you'll need to symlink those
places
to somewhere in /tmp. The CD is, of course, not writable, but a
writable mfs
file system is created for /tmp.
* Does it need to accept incoming connections from a server? If so, you
may
need inetd running. You may need modified inetd.conf and services
files. I
suggest that you pare these down to the minimum you need, in any event.
A
modified hosts file would probably be handy.

You may be able to script some/all of this by modifying the CD's
startup
script (/.profile). You might want to read through this anyway to get
an
idea of how things are being set up and how the CD system might be
different
from a "real" system.
