Thanks for all of the suggestions, overall the opinion seems to be that it would work, but that there are better alternatives. The problems that could occur include:
- Tru64 versions before 5.1B have a possible race condition inside AdvFS which could make the mirror unmountable
- Possible unreliable nature of command scripter for interacting with HSG80
- Requirement to flush filesystems before proceeding.
Alternatives which were suggested:
- AdvFS cloning (hits performance on the production disks)
- HSG80 snapshot/cloneset feature (I've used this in the past with fairly mixed results)
- LSM based mirror (Not too sure of the advantages to this - especially for us as we don't use LSM at all on this machine)
- Veritas filesystem snapshots (I haven't used this before)
I think AdvFS cloning is most appropriate for us, since the system is not hugely active during our backup window - it also removes the need for forcing a filesystem sync.
Thanks for all of the responses.
