4 quick answers from Jim L., Tom A., Tom S., & Dr. Blinn.
Thank you all very much

Short answer: 5.1B doesn't have all the patches that
5.1A+ERPs+CSPs would have and the Initial Patch Kit
for 5.1B will probably be out in Jan 2003. If 5.1B isn't
a critical requirement, then wait.

The 4 complete answers follow, all pretty much agree:

[From Tom S. @ HP]
V5.1B does have outstanding patches being included in the IPK/PK1, and
from a "number of identified and fixed problems" perspective, V5.1A+PK3
+ERP/CSPs is more "stable" than V5.1B w/o any patches. For production
systems, I'd recommend holding off upgrading to V5.1B at a minimum until
the IPK has been shipping for a couple of weeks... (Personal preference)

As for when you can expect to see a V5.1B directly on the support ftp
site: probably when we ship the IPK for V5.1B (plan is to deliver this
sometime in January 2003).

[From Jim L.]
The V5.1B Inaugural Patch Kit (IPK) has not been released yet but is in the
works. If I were you, and especially if this is a production system, I
would
wait for this to be released before installing V5.1B. I would expect that
IPK will be out sometime in Jan. 2003 if not sooner.

[From Dr. Blinn @ HP]
The initial V5.1B patch kit is in development now. You can assume
that MOST of the problems were fixed, but not all. Now that V5.1B
is out, if there are missing security fixes, they will be addressed
in the first patch kit (I can't tell you from personal knowledge or
point you to a list which if any problems addressed with ERP fixes
for V5.1A are not already fixed in V5.1B).

If you have no burning reason to upgrade to V5.1B right away (and
do bear in mind that if you don't have a system level support deal
that covers right to new versions, you are supposed to purchase an
update license, this is the first "letter" release ever that has
that arrangement), you might be better off waiting for the first
patch kit (probably this month or early next month at the latest
if things go as planned).

You should NOT "assume that 5.1B has no outstanding patch requirements"
because that isn't true. You SHOULD assume that there will be patches
for V5.1B in parallel with V5.1A for some time to come.

[From Tom A.]
Per a presentation at HPETS2002 that I attended in October, a HPAQ
employee made the statement that 5.1B would not include all the ERP's that
are currently found in 5.1A PK3 (which, by extension, would apply to post
PK3 ERPs, I would assume). This catch up was expected to occur with the
5.1B IPK (initial patch kit - PK1 if you will).

So, I would guess that 5.1A PK3 + ERP's is more "current" than 5.1B base
release.
