SMC and DECserver configurations

We just purchased 5 quad processor GS80's in a HP/Compaq/Digital recommended
configuration with 3 SMC PC's and 3 DECserver 90Ms. I have some questions
about what others have and how they hooked their systems up (these are all
single partition boxes):

1) The manual stats that a DECserver 90M is required for each GS80. Is this
true? It seems that I could easily hook 2 or more GS80s to one DECserver -
will the SMC software get confused? I would like to use the secondary port
on GS80 PCI I/O module to go to a different DECserver and different SMC to
gain some redundancy or is this a silly idea?

2) Why is a private network indicated in the configurations in the manuals
for hooking up the DECservers? Does anyone actually hook them up that way?
Pros and cons (other than the obvious security concerns)?

3) My SMCs as shipped from Compaq are EVO D5Ds yet the SMC software as
shipped contains a warning not to install it on EVO D5Ds (document #
AV-RSS7A-TE) has anyone seen this? How did you get around it or can I ignore
it? (I would not ask this but my systems are not on our support agreement
yet).

Please, I am interested in technical solutions and not possible license
violations - i.e. will it work and not am I allowed to use it that way.

Thanks in advance!
