SUMMARY: Tru64 Unix 5.1A vs. 5.1

Thanks for the replies, which I'll summarize here:

* If vendors followed HP/Compaq recommendations, there should be no issues.
Specifically, vendors shouldn't access memory via /dev/mem or use
undocumented features. Device drivers would also be an issue [but not in
our situation].
* Everything you've got "should just work"
* "Software compatibility is virtually guaranteed."
* Read the release notes before doing anything.
* Use a test system if available [not in my case]
Side note: I was trying to think of a nice back-out plan, but I
think it would involve using vdump/vrestore if I needed to roll-back
from 5.1A to 5.1. I supposed I could try something with the HSG60's like
breaking a mirror and upgrading a single disk, then remirroring if
things worked. But I think this approach would also have some risks, and
would probably involve messing with the WWID variables on the ES40s.

HP's statement:

"Tru64 UNIX Version 5.1A is a functional release that includes the following
enhancements:

* The ability to perform online addition and removal of CPUs on Compaq
AlphaServerTM GS160 and GS320 systems
* The ability to configure mixed-speed CPUs on AlphaServer GS80, GS160, and
GS320 systems
* Conformance to the UNIX 98 Product Standard
* The ability to combine two or more physical Ethernet Network Interface
Cards (NICs) to create a link aggregation group
* Support for ARMTech active resource management software
* Support for Compaq Secure Web Server software
* An upgrade to Netscape Communicator Version 4.76
* An update of the X Window System from X11R6.3 to X11R6.5
* Support for the iPlanet Directory Server software
* Support for Windows 2000 Single Sign-On software

Side note regarding link aggregation:

Cisco only supports LAG in version 7.1(1) of the Catalyst switch
software. Here's a Cisco description:

"IEEE 802.3ad Link Aggregation Control Protocol, (LACP) is defined
in IEEE 802.3ad and allows Cisco switches to manage Ethernet channeling
with devices that conform to the 802.3ad specification.

LACP is similar to Cisco's proprietary implementation of
EtherChannel, Port Aggregation Protocol (PAgP) which allows ports with
similar characteristics to form a channel through dynamic negotiation with a
partner system."
