The other morning we had one of our ES40s (5.1 w/PK5) completely seize: all
open telnet sessions were disconnected, it did not respond to pings, and
even the Caps Lock key wouldn't make the keyboard light flash. We had to
press the reset button. The server rebooted and most everything was
normal, except that we now have some files in /tmp with a "Bad file
number." There were no core/crash files generated by anything running on
the system at the time of the hang.
What might cause this?
Is there anything I should try next time, like maybe halting the system and
forcing a crash dump?
