I received many good replies to my question and almost all of them were in
favor of getting 5.1 upgraded to 5.1A and the most solid reason being the
standard support on 5.1 is ending on Feb2003.

Below is my original question and all the replies I received.

Thanks to everyone.

Hello Admins,
We are planning to upgrade our production environment which is
currently running Tru64Unix 5.1 on a GS160 and ES40 servers. The proposed
new OS is Tru64 5.1A.Storage is on HSG80 controllers.
I would like to hear the good/bad experiences from admins who are using
Tru64 5.1A and some solid reasons to upgrade from 5.1 to 5.1A.
Thanks in advance and I will summarize all the answers.

I recently upgraded from v5.1 PK3 to v5.1A PK3 and had very few problems. I
will list those in case they apply to you. First, I had a TruCluster rather
than single systems. I had to get a patched copy of the clu_upgrade shell
script from Compaq/HP Technical Support. If you are not in a cluster, this
won't affect you.
The second issue was that once I upgraded to v5.1A, I installed PK2 and
some CSP patches. In a few weeks, PK3 came out, so I rushed out and
installed it - without removing the CSP patches! Lesson here related to
patching is that
1) you
always want to make your patches reversable and save the backup information
in /var/adm/patch/backup - even if you save it to tape, and 2) remove any
patches you added to a composite patch it before trying to install the next
composite patch kit.
Other than that - and in a cluster - it went very smoothly. It helps to
read the Release Notes first and be sure you have everything you need. Goes
without saying to back up your system first.
                        Good luck, Jenny Butler

Probably the best reason to upgrade is that 5.1A will be the ONLY supported
version by end of February 2003 (less than 4 months from now).

Ashish,
everything works a little better on 5.1A and that is it. I have not had any
bad experiences in the last one month of my upgrade to 5.1A

thanks

Ashish,

How about the fact that HP is dropping support for 5.1 in February,
2003. That's a pretty solid reason. That why we're moving to 5.1A.

One very good reason to upgrade to 5.1A or soon to be released 5.1B is 5.1
support will be dropped in a few months, Feb 28, 2003 to be exact.
