Recreating tape/disk devices after replacement

Hello,

Got an hwmgr/dsfmgr problem. Tru64 5.1, AS4100, TL891 and HSZ70/RA7000s.
We recently had the TZ89 drive replaced in a TL891 library and I attempted
to get the OS to recognise the tape drive post replacement, without
rebooting.
/dev/ntape/tape0_d1 is what Legato had been writing to previously, but I
managed to create a tape2 when I did an
hwmgr -scan scsi.

After trying a few other incantations of hwmgr and dsfmgr, I used hwmgr to
delete tape0, tape1 and tape2 and rebooted the machine after hours, hoping
for tape0's return.... which is when tape3 appeared :)
This is somewhat of a Solaris approach - I'm now painfully familiar with how
Tru64 enumerates a distinct Device ID to each SCSI device, but haven't
sussed out exactly how the status database works.
I tried recreating the special files for /dev/tape/tape0* and
/dev/ntape/tape0* with mknod and then trying:
dsfmgr -e tape3 tape0
but unsurprisingly dsfmgr can't find device records for tape0 in its status
database.

What I'd really like is to be able to recreate /dev/?tape/tape0* so that I
don't have to reconfigure Legato.
I've been wrestling hwmgr and dsfmgr for a day or so now, to no avail. Any
hints?
