With much thanks to those who spent time trying to help, it looks like
I'm going to have to just reinstall the OS on this system ... :-(

Most of the suggestions were for something I had already done, though
perhaps not made very clear in my original message, so I can say at least
that I'm quite sure I tried everything (most things?) that other folks
would also have tried. One message pointed me at the /sbin/dn_setup
script, which can be used to rebuild the hardware database from scratch.
I ran that (chrooted into my recovered root directory) and still no
success. I'm figuring if that didn't do it, it isn't likely that I'll
be able to figure out what the problem is. :-(

What this says, though about my ability to recover a 5.1A system in the
event of disaster is frankly quite depressing. :-(

I currently have three of these, two of which are quite high-profile in
this organization. I consider myself lucky that the problem I'm having
right now occurred on a system most of our users don't even know exists,
but when it happens on a more major system, it looks like they're going
to have to wait as we re-install the OS and patches, and reconfigure
everything. Yet if the same happens on a system that still has 4.0 on
it, we'll be able to have that one back online (nearly) as quickly as
we can read the backup tape... :-/

I'd be very interested in knowing what other sights have as a plan for a
5.1A system recovery in the event of disk failure ...

Thanks, all, for your time ...
