SUMMARY: FDDI ring works in what system states

I didn't get my exact answer about what system states the FDDI ring
should work in but after exchanging emails with Selden Ball (thanks), I
better checked all the cables and connections again and found one pair
swapped (red-black-red-black, should have been red-black-black-red)
which I believe effectively broke the ring at that link so a second
break (due to down system) would result in an incomplete ring.
Changing appears to fix it as a subsequent system shutdown did not
appear to affect ring communications at all.

P.S. - This is a week old but needed to wait for a maintenace window to
try stuff...

We have a backend FDDI ring between 5 Alpha systems (Tru64 and OpenVMS)
using DEFPA-DC cards. I was told the ring would still function with
one of the system down as long as it was not completely powered off. We
have upgraded the O/S on a couple of these systems on this ring at
different times lately and each time during the upgrade traffic on the
ring was affected (could not ping between several systems.

Is it true that the ring should still function w/ one system down? Or
is it only funtional at run level 3 (network started)? Does it matter
whether it's at the SRM console or single-user mode?

Thanks.
