We are a school of over 16,000 students and over 2000 support faculty and
staff. We are running SCT Banner2000 on a UNIX environment (currently an
Alpha 4100). We support approximately 300 Banner users. We are in the
process of evaluating for a future hardware replacement.

We are interested in your feedback on a few items, or any stories you can
share (positive or negative or both) about your experience with UNIX DB
server environments:

(*) What server hardware are you using? How much memory and how many
CPUS?
What is the size of your institution and how many users are you
supporting?

(*) Have you implemented or are you considering a cluster solution for
your
Banner database? If so, what kind of solution (hardware/software/both)?

(*) What kind of disk storage are you using for your database? Are you
using or have you considered NAS or SAN solutions? If you are using such
a
solution, what has been your experience, and how has it compared with your
past experience of physical/system attached storage?

(*) What experiences with file services such as VxFS, JFS, AFS, DFS, etc,
have you experienced and have they provided a sizable enhancement
off-balancing the management overhead?

Thank you for your time and thoughts and we look forward to sharing our
experiences in the future.
