Problem:
Apparent assembler segmentation fault when cc'ing or gcc'ing
ap/ap_ebcdic.c.
What Worked:
- Set system variable to CC="cc -oldas" before the configure, even
though my assembler is version 3.04.34. Then make as usual.

What didn't work, but I still greatly appreciate the time people took:
- Use gmake. (Alan Davis) Didn't fix the problem, but now I have gmake
AND rpm for Tru64. Nice perq.
- Use cc. (Dave Hill, Peter Chapin, Xavier Mertens) Well, I used cc in
the final solution, but it had failed exactly as gcc before I had posted
the question. But it seems to be the consensus to use cc when
possible. Thanks.
Things not tried, but none the less, greatly appreciated:
- Try to build apache_1.3.24 instad of 26. (Rodney) The product I am
building it for requires, or so they say, 26. This was looming as a
last resort.
- Try the apache binary for Tru64, 1.3.24 available. (Dave Hill) See
previous comment. Also, the target product had very specific build
requirements which I would violate only as a last resort.
- Try playing with optimization flags (gcc -O -c or gcc -O2 -c) (David
Komanek) This was next in line. As far as I know it might have done
the trick as well.
Encouragement and signposts:
- Was able to compile apache 1.3.26 on a Tru64 v5.1A. (Virtually
everyone that answered.) Thanks, it was nice to hear that it could be
done.
Thanks much. Having this list is worth many $K's in support costs per
year.
