4.0G latest patches breaks long usernames?

Dear all,

I have a curious problem. I have a number of user names which are
longer than 8 characters, mainly machine names with a '$' appended for
Samba, for example:

isabelle$

Now, until I installed the latest jumbo patch and security patches
this was all fine. Now anything above 8 characters causes problems.

Fundamentally any request for a username > 8 characters returns a
failure both under Samba and sendmail (so this is not a Samba issue).

Is there a switch to ensure that names > 8 characters are allowed
again?
