Moving Large File

Greetings,

Question: How can i strip down a 20GB tar file into,
say 10 smaller files? (tar file contains thousands of
smaller files). I think i read somewhere that this
were possible, and one could concatenate them at
destination, but i can't find that reference anywhere
now that i need it!!

Background::
I have a scenario that i have to move about 20GB of
data residing on a tru64 server and send somewhere
else where the environment is purely MacOS (OSX, Linux
Based).

They dont have tape drives, so that option is out.

They ended up sending us a firewire/USB drive, for us
to load the data (from our OS9 Cube)
Problem occurs that the Mac, using Fetch/FTP, dies at
the 2.1GB mark, wont go any further. Dies with "error
number -1309", which i cant find a reference anywhere.

_Thanks in advance
