Password expired problem

I am running Tru64 5.1 on an Alpha ES40. Problem is this: I build
student accounts at the beginning of the semester and assign them an
arbitrary password. The scripts I use to build the accounts force the
user to change their password the first time they successfully login. I
use edauth to force the change.

We have two different labs, one with NCD xterminals and one with pc's.
Users that telnet or ssh to the server from a pc have no
problems....however those that choose to use xterminals do. When they
login they are promted by the system that their password has expired and
ask to change it. They get the popup to enter the old password and then
the 4 choices to change it. When they make a selection to change the
password the system boots them out without changing the password.

I looked at a users .xsession-errors file and the following was in it

Warning: Cannot convert string "nil2" to type FontStruct
XIO: fatal IO error 54 (Connection reset by peer) on X server
xxxxxx:0.0
X connection to xxx:0.0 broken (explicit kill or server shutdown)
xterm: fatal IO error 54 (Connection reset by peer) or KillClient on X
server"

can anyone tell me sorda why this is happening and offer suggestions to
make it work correctly?

thanks,
darryl
