swap not on boot disk

Is there a known problem with having no swap space on the boot disk?

This is a new ES40 running 5.1a, patch kit 2, 12GB memory, with 12GB swap
space on each of two other disks, and more than 12GB in /var which is on the
first disk. I tried to halt and force a crash dump to prove that it works,
and it didn't.

Recalling that the Tru64 install refused to set up the first (OS) disk
without at least a small swap partition even with custom disk labels (I had
to remove that tiny swap later, and manually set swap to the two disks that
the installation had ignored), I started wondering if the two are perhaps
connected. Might there be a requirement to have some swap on the first disk?

Does this sound familiar to anyone? If it is supposed to work OK without
swap on the first disk, I'll go rattling around for some more meaningful
details to narrow down where the problem really lies, maybe something needs
to be set in the console. But if it's a known limitation then I'll have to
buy a bigger disk and recreate the system before too many people are using
it.
