Xaccess syntax question

Dear gurucreatures

I would like to restrict (in)direct xdmcp connections.
Hostnames allowed to xdmcp fall in two categories:

*.something.vtt.fi
same_for_group_of_hosts*.something_else.vtt.fi (ie. start with same string)

How achieve this with Xaccess?

I have tried several wildcard patterns and from the results I'm
ready to argue that wildcards don't work as a part of the hostname:
*.foo.vtt.fi works but fish*.foo.vtt.fi does not.

 From Xaccess...

# ENTRY FORMAT

# An entry in this file is either a host name or a pattern. A
# pattern may contain one or more meta characters (`*' matches any
# sequence of 0 or more characters, and `?' matches any single
# character) which are compared against the host name of the remote
# device requesting service.
